Sikh Gurdwara – San Jose (“Sikh Gurdwara” or “Gurdwara” hereafter) has been operating in Santa Clara County since 1985 under Federal Tax ID 77-009-0048 and is also registered as a non-profit religious organization with the State of California. Sikh Gurdwara is open 7 days a week to meet the needs of devotees and has religious services every day in the morning and evening. On Sundays, religious programs start at 4 AM and end at 9 PM. Average weekly attendance exceeds over 10,000 people.
The Sikh Gurdwara is committed to providing the community with the utmost transparency regarding its operations and activities. This document serves to strive towards that commitment. Sikh Gurdwara is one of the largest Sikh temples in the United States with an annual income exceeding $2.5 million. To manage the temple effectively and to meet the demands of devotees, management is providing this transparency statement discussing the Sikh Gurdwara’s operations, programs and investments.
Sikh Gurdwara follows generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to record all transactions associated with its operations. All transactions are recorded in QuickBooks. Sikh Gurdwara retains documents associated with financial transactions at the Gurdwara office. At the end of the fiscal month and fiscal year, the Sikh Gurdwara CPA records all transactions completed by the Gurdwara, including, but not limited to, cash receipts, cash disbursements for various activities, mortgage pay-down, non-cash activities (i.e., depreciation), etc. in QuickBooks. Any devotee may come to the Gurdwara office or reach out to a Gurdwara officer to get help understand financial information presented on the website.
At the end of the fiscal year, the Gurdwara’s CPA prepares financial statements, notes and disclosures. An external independent CPA firm audits the financial statement and disclosures. This statement is released to the members and devotees through the Sikh Gurdwara website https://sanjosegurdwara.org/. The Gurdwara Bylaws have been effective since inception in 1985 and were last amended on December 18, 2016, with approval by the General Body. Please click here to see the Bylaws document.
The Gurdwara Articles of Incorporation have been effective since inception in 1985. As required by California State laws, the Gurdwara Committee files for President, General Secretary and CFO to the California Secretary of State every two years. The Gurdwara is open to all devotees and visitors. No one is barred from entry on the basis on gender, caste, creed, color, religion or race. Please click here to see document details.
The first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak created Langar for several reasons, the primary ones being because he wanted equality for all and a removal of caste barriers among the people.
